JOB SUMMARY:
Under general direction provides patient care to a group of patients. Assumes primary responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care. Co-ordinates the overall clinical activities of an assigned nursing unit on a specific shift.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Determines nursing interventions based on assessment data. Prioritizes identified needs, implements nursing actions and evaluates patient outcomes. Develops or revises the plan of care to address identified patient needs.
2. Co-ordinates the overall clinical activities of the unit when assigned to the charge nurse role. Collaborates with the nursing house supervisor on staffing for a particular shift.
3. Plans, implements and evaluates clinical programs. Evaluates the ability of the patient/family/significant others to understand and participate in decisions about their care. Facilitates patient education. Maintains accurate clinical records.
4. Performs advanced or specialized nursing skills competently and independently. Maintains current knowledge of clinical nursing practice. Acts as a clinical resource for staff on unit.
5. Communicates and consults with other health care disciplines. Acts as a patient advocate. Represents nursing at multidisciplinary rounds.
6. Participates in the development of standards, procedures and protocols. Facilitates evidence-based practice. Promotes change in nursing practice.
7. Takes a proactive role under the guidance of Nursing Management/Nursing Education in training, education and CQI activites of Trauma Center nursing staff. Promotes a learning environment. Identifies opportunities for improvement.
8. Performs other professional duties as may be assigned within his/her scope and ability.
DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY:
Responsible for making patient care and 1st level staffing decisions while in charge of a shift. Responsible for the efficient use of equipment and supplies for the unit during the shift. Responsible for the placement of patients and bed allocation during a shift.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR JOB:
Education
Required:
Graduate of an approved School of Nursing
BCLS – ACLS for ER, Critical Care and OR
Other:
Professional practising designation
Experience:
Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of nursing experience with at least one (1) year in the assigned area of practice
Language skills:
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
Skills:
Essential
Experience in a charge or practice leader role
Required
